Training, Over Time

Sometimes, no matter how much I train, it feels like all I am doing is holding on to where I am.

The longer I train Jiu-Jitsu, the more I realize that I spend far more time maintaining my level than seeing any clear improvement.

In the beginning, progress was easy to see.

I learned new techniques. Movements that once seemed impossible began to make sense. Little by little, I learned to hold my own against training partners who used to overwhelm me.

But over time, it stopped being so simple.

I keep training, yet there are days when nothing seems to change. Things I used to be able to do suddenly stop working.

My body changes, and so do my training partners. Nothing stays exactly the same.

Eventually, I stopped expecting every session to give me something new.

Some days I make a little progress.
Some days nothing changes.
Some days I find myself relearning something I thought I already knew.

Still, I go back to the academy and train.

Years later, it is hard to separate one day from another.

Training was never just the days that went well.

All of it was training.
