About AZABU HEMP GEAR
AZABU takes its name from 麻布 (asa no nuno), meaning “hemp cloth.”
AZABU HEMP GEAR is a Tokyo-based brand creating hemp Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu gis and training gear. For us, Jiu-Jitsu is part of daily life: going to the dojo, training, washing the gi, and doing it again the next day. Over time, that repetition made us think more seriously about the gi itself. We wanted to create a gi built for people who train this way.
Cotton gis have long been trusted by Jiu-Jitsu practitioners, and for good reason. But with years of training and repeated washing, wear begins to show — especially around the collar, sleeves, and pants. We wanted to find a material that could better handle regular use. That search led us to hemp. Hemp is strong, breaks in with use, and develops its own character over time.
At AZABU HEMP GEAR, we test our products by actually using them: training in them, washing them, and documenting how they change through long-term use. Our current hemp gi has now been recorded through nearly a year of regular training, and we continue to follow how it changes over time.
Life in Tokyo has also shaped how we think about design. We are drawn to things that are simple, functional, and made to be used for a long time. Less decoration. Fewer unnecessary details. Better structure. More purpose.
We want to make gear that becomes part of daily training and continues to earn its place over time. AZABU HEMP GEAR continues to grow through the same process: training, using, washing, observing, and improving.
