Is a Lightweight BJJ Gi Better for Summer?

Why Do So Many People Choose a Lightweight BJJ Gi in Summer?

Every summer, more practitioners start looking for a lightweight BJJ gi.

A gi that feels perfectly normal during the rest of the year can feel heavier and warmer as temperatures and humidity rise. Summer training also means more sweat, so it is natural to want a gi that feels lighter and dries faster after washing.

Tournament weigh-ins are another reason to reduce gi weight.

At IBJJF events and many other gi tournaments, athletes weigh in wearing their competition uniform. If a division has a 70 kg (154 lb) limit, the athlete and uniform must remain within that limit.

That means a difference of a few hundred grams can matter. Weigh-in procedures vary by event, so competitors should always check the rules for their tournament.

But what actually makes a lightweight gi different from a standard gi?

What Is a Lightweight BJJ Gi?

A lightweight BJJ gi is designed to reduce overall weight compared with a standard gi.

This is often achieved by using lighter fabric or lowering the GSM of the jacket. GSM means grams per square meter. In general, a lower GSM indicates a lighter fabric.

However, GSM does not tell you the total weight of a gi. Size, cut, collar construction, reinforcements, weave, and pants material all affect the final number. When comparing gis from different brands, look at the total product weight rather than the jacket GSM alone.

The advantages of a lightweight gi are straightforward:
• Less weight at tournament weigh-ins
• Easier to carry
• A lighter feel in hot weather
• Faster drying when the fabric is thin

For frequent competitors and anyone who regularly travels with a gi, a lightweight model can be a very practical choice.

But reducing weight also creates differences worth considering.

The Trade-Offs of Reducing Weight

Reducing the weight of a gi usually means using less fabric or minimizing certain reinforced areas.

Because of that, under otherwise similar conditions, a gi made with less material may show differences after long-term use.

Repeated gripping, pulling, and friction against the mats can cause the fabric and stitching to wear earlier over time.

Thinner, more flexible fabric may also be slightly easier for an opponent to grip, and it can sometimes shrink more during repeated washing and drying than a standard-weight gi.

This does not mean that every lightweight gi is less durable.

The lifespan of any BJJ gi depends on many factors, including the fabric itself, weave construction, stitching quality, training frequency, training intensity, and how the gi is washed and dried.

Lightweight gis certainly offer many advantages.

But like any design choice, they also involve trade-offs.

So when choosing a summer BJJ gi, is weight really the first thing we should look at?

Is Weight Really What Makes a Gi Comfortable in Summer?

A gi that feels light when you first put it on can certainly feel comfortable.

But once training starts, it only takes a few minutes before the gi is no longer dry. Its weight before class and its feel after you begin sweating are not the same thing.

• How heavy does it feel after absorbing sweat?
• Does the fabric cling to the body?
• Does it trap heat?
• How easily does air move through the fabric?
• How quickly does it dry after training or washing?

These qualities depend not only on fabric weight, but also on the fiber, weave, thickness, and overall construction of the gi.

A very light gi may still feel heavy or clingy once it is wet. A slightly heavier gi can remain comfortable after training begins, depending on the material and construction.

When choosing a BJJ gi for summer, it is worth looking beyond how many grams it saves while dry and considering how it feels once you are sweating.

What We Prioritized at AZABU

The AZABU HEMP GEAR Hemp Training Gi was not designed as an ultralight competition gi.

We were not chasing the lowest possible GSM. What mattered more to us was how the gi felt after training had already begun.

Most of your time in a gi is not spent standing still before class. It is spent moving, sweating, being gripped, and washing the gi again and again.

Choosing hemp does not automatically make a gi lighter. What hemp offers is a different balance of strength, breathability, and moisture absorption.

In our own summer training, the fabric did not feel excessively hot despite its thickness, and it did not restrict movement.

Since 2025, we have used and washed the same hemp gi through nearly a full year of almost daily training. We wanted to know more than how it felt when new. We wanted to see whether it remained comfortable and structurally sound after repeated use.

A comfortable summer gi and a simply lightweight gi are not always the same thing.

Which Gi Is Best for Summer?

Lightweight gis have clear advantages.

If you need to save a few hundred grams at a weigh-in, reduce the weight of your bag, or shorten drying time, a lightweight gi may be the most practical choice.

If you need an ultralight competition gi, the AZABU hemp gi was not designed for that purpose.

If you want to use the same gi repeatedly over years of regular training, and you care about durability and how the fabric feels once you begin sweating, weight should be only one part of the decision.

Your competition gi and daily training gi do not have to be the same. One gi does not need to solve every problem.

The best summer gi is not necessarily the lightest one. It is the one that matches your priorities and the way you train.
