What Changed After 7 Months of Using a Hemp Gi
Share
Conditions of Use
This entry documents changes observed over approximately seven months of continuous use.
Hemp gis are still uncommon, so this is structured as a real-world reference.
• Single gi used continuously (~7 months)
• Regular training + repeated washing/drying
• Partial comparison with cotton gis
• Black gi used in competition
External Changes
1) Shrinkage
No significant shrinkage under normal use.
However, the black gi—under repeated wash + machine dry cycles—showed clear shortening in sleeves and pants.
→ This reflects a higher-stress usage condition.
2) Texture
Initial: firm, structured, slight sheen
After 1–2 washes:
• Sheen disappears
• Weave becomes visible
Over time:
• Gradual softening
• Creasing develops
• Fabric adapts to the body
3) Color
Natural white:
Not a uniform white—shows the raw tone of hemp
With use and washing, the surface settles, and slight changes in tone can be observed.
Black:
Gradual loss of color uniformity over time
4) Creasing
Occurs naturally in high-mobility areas
→ Material characteristic, not damage
5) Wear
Observed at the collar edge (typical wear point)
Otherwise:
• No notable wear
• No tearing over 7 months
During Use
1) Weight
Noticeable at first
→ Becomes irrelevant over time
2) Movement
No restriction
No performance impact
3) Grip / Friction
More friction than lightweight gis
→ Less slip
No clear increase in grip advantage for the opponent
Stable in both top and bottom
4) Comfort
No discomfort during extended use
No increase in fatigue
Not excessively hot despite thickness
Competition Use
Black gi used in competition
• Passed inspection
• No issues during matches
Heavier than lightweight gis,
but not restrictive without weight cutting
Note:
Long-term color change may affect compliance depending on use
Observations
Initial feel: heavy, stiff
→ especially for lightweight gi users
Changes with use and washing
After ~7 months:
• Structure maintained
• No tearing
Compared to some cotton gis, less early damage was observed over the same period.
Summary
A seven-month real-use record.
Serves as a baseline reference for those considering hemp gis.

AJ,
Thanks for following the project for so long!
We had to keep the first batch pretty limited, including the size range.
A3L and A4 are definitely something we want to look at going forward.
Really appreciate the support.
It’s a bit disappointing to see your sizes offered. I waited for several months, followed the journey, waited in anticipation to support your small business, and you capped out at A3? It’s a shame. But I still hope you do great! I love the minimalist look. Hopefully you will offer A3L and A4 in the future.
About how much will the gi cost?
